Bessèges in the Past

This series was undertaken so that I can better understand where I had been living for the past 8 years. To understand the present, you have to "tap" into the past.

I love this valley, this small village full of history, its stones, its flora, its fauna and its people.

This little exploration through these old images gave me joy and encourages me to learn even more about Bessèges's past.

Thanks to Jacky Brignier, from the “Puits de Mémoire” association, for sharing his file of old postcards.

These postcards from which I was inspired were produced at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century by Mr. Artige (son), publisher in Aubenas, Mr. Jean Gascue, photographer in Bessèges from 1902- to 1914, Mr. Louis Ducamp and Mr. Henri Andre, also photographers in Bessèges and Mr. Brunel photographer in Ales from 1912 to 1932.

Thank you also to all those “old timers” who shared anecdotes with me about their experiences over time. These stories brought the images to life as I painted them this winter.
